Carl Burks Obituary

Carl David Burks

Carl David Burks, 90, of Tiffin, passed away with family by his bedside at 2:08 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at The Willows of Tiffin, where he resided the past two years.

Carl was born Jan. 3, 1933, in Carey, the son of George M and B. Olets (Dible) Burks. Carl married Beverly A. Hunter on Sept. 7, 1952, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey, and she preceded him in death Nov. 9, 2018.

Carl graduated from McCutchenville High School and served his country in U.S. Army during the Korean War. He came back to the Burks family farm and never looked back. He loved the smell of freshly turned soil and watching his fields flourish. It was a great place to raise his family (and chickens), which meant the world to him.

Carl enjoyed visiting with friends and family, whether around the neighborhood, at church, or in the nursing home. He simply loved people. He also loved coaching youth baseball. He found great joy teaching the youngsters catch, throw, and hit. In his later years, he had fun dabbling in Karaoke outings and talking to the ducks at The Willows. A man of deep faith, he was a member of Family of Faith Lutheran Church, Tiffin.

He was blessed with five children, Dave (Mary) Burks of Inlet Beach, Florida, Jim (Patricia) Burks of Findlay, Tom (Lisa) Burks of Dahlonega, Georgia, and Lisa (Mike) Yoder and Lynn (Dan) Miller, both of Tiffin, 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five siblings, Floy Swerlein of Carey, Lois (Jerry) Wobler of Ada, Virginia Berberick of Findlay, Paul (Lynn) Burks of Upper Sandusky, and Fred Burks of Sycamore; and in-laws, Phyllis Burks, Romaine Burks, and Mike Jinks.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife; six siblings, Donald, Clyde, and Owen Burks, Eva Pahl, Mary Latham, and Helen Berberick; four in-laws, Melvin Swerlein, Jerry Pahl, Les Latham, and Carol Burks; and granddaughter, Stacy Yoder.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey.

Carl's funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2023, at the funeral home with Pastor Phil Moredyke officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey, with military graveside rites conducted by Carey Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Family of Faith Lutheran Church or charity of the donor's choice and sent to the funeral home.

Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, is honored to serve Carl's family.
