In 1946 as a teenager, he went on a United Nations expedition to Poland during the war. His job was taking care of cattle which were delivered when they arrived at Odessa. He enjoyed the experience. In about 1958, he played men's slow pitch softball and had a game in which he was the first pitcher in his league to pitch a no hit game, of which he was very proud.

He attended Wadsworth City Schools and graduated from Kent State University in 1951 with a major in music education. He became a band director for several years until his hearing became affected. He then received a degree in counseling from the University of Toledo. He completed his 40+ years in education as a guidance counselor and AV specialist. He retired from education in 1990 at which time he then took up the game of golf which he enjoyed.

In 2003 he decided to spend his winter in Florida. In 2004 his wife retired and joined him in Florida where they stayed from October through April each year for nearly 20 years. He loved Florida and the warm weather. In 2021, they spent their last winter in Florida and remained in Tiffin at that time.
