Dan Clevenger Obituary

Dan F. Clevenger

Dan Clevenger, 82, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023.

He was born Aug. 6, 1941, to Floyd and Mabel Clevenger. He married Becky Schultz on August 27, 1983, in Tiffin.

He is survived by his wife, Becky of Columbus; son, Logan (Laura) Clevenger; grandsons, Paul Daniel and Thomas Maxwell Clevenger of Powell; brother-in-law, Tom (Kathy) Schultz; sister-in-law, Connie Ross Schultz; and many nieces and nephews.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley (Joe) Schroeder; and brothers-in-law, Mike and Bob "Dutch" Schultz.

Dan was a 1959 graduate of Calvert High school and 1963 graduate of University of Michigan where he attended on a basketball scholarship. His playing days were cut short due to injuries but he forged many, many lifelong friendships at U of M that were still going strong. After graduation, he joined U.S. Marine Corp Reserves. He then returned to Detroit and worked for UPS in their corporate office when they were just starting up and did sports broadcasting. His obsession with working out and physical fitness brought him back to Tiffin where he opened The Downtown Athletic Club. In 1977, he moved to Columbus where he pursued a career in political consulting and legislative lobbying. He had inherent neuropathy which spurred his passion to help find a cure for all neurological diseases. In his last years, he was dedicated to arranging a fundraiser to help find that cure. He came so close, but fate stacked the deck.

His lifelong love of the Michigan Wolverines took us to every home football game in Ann Arbor for over 30 years until he was no longer able to get around. His family was always his top priority in his life. In 2022, with the help of Becky he completed and self-published his autobiography "Fate Stacked the Deck." Because he had little knowledge of his own dad's history, he wanted to be sure his son and grandsons had reference to his life. He had many successes in his life, but we are all most proud of his book. Dan's final chapter, although not what he had planned, was six weeks spent at The James Cancer Center at Ohio State University after tongue cancer surgery then to The Laurels of Norworth where he spent his final days with dementia.

There will be no visitation and a private Catholic graveside service will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery near Tiffin.

Arrangements are being handled by Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, Tiffin.

Memorials can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Ohio's Hospice of Central Ohio, or your local humane society.
