Daniel Smalley Obituary

Daniel E. "Dan" Smalley

Daniel E. "Dan" Smalley, 33, of McCutchenville, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident at the intersection of State Highway 53 and State Hwy. 587 in McCutchenville on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023.

Dan was born Nov. 6, 1989, in Upper Sandusky, the son of Mark E. Smalley and Dawn E. (Riedel) Needles. His father, Mark, and stepmother, Joan, survive in McCutchenville. His mother, Dawn, and stepfather, Paul Needles, survive in Sycamore.

Dan, to the delight of administration, graduated from Mohawk High School in 2008. He considered himself a free-spirited man, along with his dogs, Brody, Nala, and Odin. A surprise to many, he enjoyed and took great pride in his annual garden. Whatever he did was done with a passion, from deer hunting and fishing to riding his motorcycle, and even his tattoos. The more ink the better.

Dan had a heart of gold. His love of people started with kids, especially his nieces and nephews, Taylor, Lane, Hunter, and Jasmine. He enjoyed being a social butterfly. Having a beer (or two) and shooting the bull with his buddies was considered a great day. He was affectionately known as DanFat or Damn Dan by his friends and family. Either was fitting.

In 2010, Dan was hit with the word cancer. Being the strong-willed person, he battled testicular cancer and won. As he put it, "I BEAT IT"!

Dan was a welder and worked at Holtgreven Scales and Electronic Corporation in Findlay. He took great pride in all his welding projects.

He will be missed by his parents; siblings, Kevin Smalley, Heather (Josh) Traxler, and Jordan (Abby) Needles; two stepsiblings, Renee (Josh) Stocks and Jared Kincade; paternal grandfather, Wayne Smalley; and maternal grandparents, Verlin and Sally Riedel.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Hilda Smalley.

Visitation for family and friends will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey.

Dan's memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, at the funeral home with Deacon Kevin Wintersteller officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey.

Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help with expenses or American Cancer Society and sent to the funeral home.
