Gail E. Shreiner
Gail Elizabeth Fredericks Shreiner passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital after 77 great years of life.
Gail was born Sept. 8, 1946, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. She attended St. Michael's Catholic School in Worthington and Bishop Watterson High School, Columbus. She met her beloved husband of 54 years, Robert, at The Ohio State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Science-Education. Always driven, she later earned a Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Ashland University. A dedicated and decorated academic professional for over 30 years, she began teaching elementary near Robert's military duty stations in El Paso, Texas, and Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Arriving in Tiffin in 1972 and soon to raise three energetic boys, she spent many years at Tiffin City Schools as an elementary teacher, HEIGHTS gifted education teacher, and finally as supervisor of gifted education. Throughout her career, these words by Henry David Thoreau guided her way: "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, Perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer… Let him step to the music which he hears, However measured or far away."
Gail actively participated in her community, serving as President for numerous organizations including Junior Woman's League, Welcome Wagon, Y-Wives, and Tiffin City School Band Boosters. She also served as Board of Trustees Chair for Mercy Hospital and later as Vice Chair of the Foundation Board at Mercy. She received Mother Mary Bernadine Leadership Award from Mercy Hospital. Other organizations included Sandusky Valley Herb Society, Penthouse, TTT camping group, St. Joseph's Catholic School, Ohio Association for Gifted Children, and Northwest Ohio Consortium for Coordinators of Gifted.
Along with being with her wonderful family, she enjoyed camping, antiques, traveling, activities with friends, and reading, especially mysteries. She was a die-hard Ohio State University football fan and could belt out an O-H with the best of them. Gail also loved bridge club (over 40 years), even though as they joked, they didn't play much bridge. She proudly observed her three children in many sports events, art presentations, and musical performances. Trusty feline companions over the years included Blue, Fat Cat, and Lily.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Todd (Amy); son, Matt (Denise, River, and Quinn); son, Jeff (Viviane, Ben, Vincent, and Noah); brother, David (Teresa); and nieces and nephews, Liz, Jenny, Jon, Steve, and Amanda.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents, Casey Fredericks and Marian "Bonnie" Johnson Fredericks; and sister, Mary Thompson.
Gail's calm, gracious, and thoughtful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor to one of these organizations, Tiffin Charitable Trust, Tiffin Seneca Public Library, Mercy Hospital of Tiffin-Foundation Fund, or funds for "Buddy Benches" for and Seneca County school.
