Harriet Jane Darmour

Harriet Jane (Gerber) Darmour passed away peacefully Thursday, January 30, 2025, in Wadsworth.

She was born May 25, 1933, to Edgar H. and Lela I. (Shafer) Gerber in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the youngest of three children. At age 4, the family moved to the Shafer farm in Decatur. She attended a one-room school through 4th grade and finished her schooling in Decatur, graduating in 1941.

Graduation took her to her church affiliated college at Heidelberg. There she quickly met the love of her life, Ken Darmour. They were married November 5, 1955, and enjoyed 50 years together. Her years at Heidelberg created long-lasting friendships. She was a member of the Philalethean Society.

From growing up on an Indiana farm to seeing the world, she visited six continents. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for Youth for Understanding for 20 years, receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1996. The family hosted many exchange students. Playing tennis provided continuing enjoyment and many deep friendships. Always the learner, she enjoyed her membership in the Wadsworth Literature and Arts Club. She was inducted into the Chataqua Literary Society in 2000.

She was a life member of the United Church of Christ and a member of Trinity UCC in Wadsworth for over 60 years. She appreciated Biblical history and was a lifelong learner of religious history and customs.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Michael) Grandillo of Tiffin and John of Woodbury, Tennessee; grandchildren, Vincent (Amy) Grandillo and Gina Grandillo; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two siblings; husband; and son, Joseph.

Private interment will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Wadsworth Memorial Park, 274 Grandview Avenue.
