John G. Ehmann
John G. Ehmann, 86, of Bucyrus, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023.
John was born April 8, 1937, in Bucyrus, to William F. and Edith L. (Sand) Ehmann and was a 1955 graduate of Whetstone High School. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska. Following his time in the Army, John returned home and joined his father on their farm. This passion carried on for the rest of his life. He married Mary Laura Hohler on Nov. 21, 1970, and survives.
John's life revolved around his family and farming. He was always supportive of his children and grandchildren at their sporting events or activities, was never shy about playing pranks or practical jokes on them, and, if they were interested, he taught them what he knew about the land and livestock. He and Mary shared 53 years together and cherished the companionship. John enjoyed a drive around the county occasionally traveling speeds of 20 MPH as to compare other crops. Some of these drives even included a stop at the local dairy shop in Prospect where John and family enjoyed a banana split. They shared good times in Virginia Beach and for many years, enjoyed their annual one-month trip to Ft. Myers, Florida. John put on his work clothes every morning and had a shovel in his hand every day tending to whatever was needed around the farm. Even after "retiring" in 2008, he kept busy offering advice and spent many hours in his garden tending to his potatoes, tomatoes, and whatever else he felt like growing.
John was a lifelong member of Good Hope Lutheran Church and served on the board for Country Star for several years. In earlier years, he enjoyed bowling in leagues at Suburban Lanes. For relaxation, he and Mary enjoyed the comfort of their front porch often waving as others traveled by. He kept his property neat and tidy, was always up for a good meal, and if you ever heard loose change rattling in a pocket, you knew that John was near.
He will be missed by his wife, Mary; children, Traci (David) Coffman, J.C. (Marilyn), Clay (Mary), and Elisa (Tyson) Griffin; grandchildren, Jenna and Allie Coffman, Claire and Keith Ehmann, Elizabeth, Robin, and Abigail Ehmann, and A.J. Griffin; sister, Cheryl (Dr. Daniel) Ulmer; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara Ehmann, Nancy Suttle, and Daryl (Geneva) Ehmann.
Visitation for family and friends will be 10 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, at Good Hope Lutheran Church in the church auditorium. John's memorial service will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the church sanctuary. Military rites will be provided by U.S. Army Honor Guard after his memorial service. He will be privately laid to rest at a later date at Campbell Cemetery. For those unable to attend his memorial service, a live stream recording will be offered through the church's Facebook page at Good Hope Lutheran Church Bucyrus, OH.
Donations can be made payable to Good Hope Lutheran Church and will be accepted at the church on the day of service or through Wise Funeral Service.
Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on the guestbook of his tribute page at
