Kylar Gillig Obituary

Kylar Reece Gillig

Kylar Reece Gillig, 7, was born May 19, 2017. On July 19, 2024, she was diagnosed with DIPG and passed away at home on the morning of Monday, April 28, 2025, surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her parents, Christopher A. and Stacy L. (Smith) Gillig of Alvada; sisters, Jade Gillig (12) and Adrie Gillig (10), both of Alvada; grandparents, Larry and Laurie Gillig of New Riegel and Gary and Judy Smith of Alvada; great-grandparents, Jim Kinn of Alvada and Dolly Smith of New Riegel; uncles and aunts, Randy Smith of New Riegel, Craig (Jenny) Gillig of New Riegel and Corey (Katina Best) Gillig of Tiffin; and cousins, Brittany Miller, Brianna Frey, Brooklyn Gillig, and Brandon Gillig.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Fern Kinn, Wayne Smith, Elmer and Mildred Gillig, and Claire and Erma McGrain.

Kylar's independence and strength shined through at times when her body was failing her. In the moments when help was really needed, she wouldn't ask. Instead of asking others, she would find a way!

Kylar's favorite activities included playing with her sisters, riding the 4-wheeler, playing with her baby doll, "Rosie," cooking for others with her kitchen set, swimming, drawing pictures, and campfires with her family and friends. Kylar loved her friends. Playing Roblox on her iPad with friends was especially a favorite. Kylar loved doing the monkey bars, loved Spiderman, and loved her dog, Nova. Some of her favorite memories were camping at a family pond. She always talked about going back to Hocking Hills and Sarasota, Florida, where family vacations took place.

Kylar had a huge heart that touched so many and inspired all of us. Throughout Kylar's journey, she became very curious and eager to learn about the celebration of Jesus. She asked to read at church and became a lector. She was then nominated to receive the "Open Arms" Award from the Diocese of Toledo, which her family will receive June 1st.

We are so incredibly proud of Kylar and will carry her love with us forever.

Her Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2025, at All Saints Parish with the Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may visit with family from 2-7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S.
