Mabel Detterman Obituary

Mabel Marie Detterman

Mabel Marie (Ruth) Detterman, 93, of Bucyrus and formerly of Bloomville and Attica, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, at Legacy Bucyrus following a year of battling with sundowners and dementia.

The family extends special thanks to the staff at Legacy for all the special care given to mother, especially to Brittani, Sara, Tom, Tiffany, Haley, Cassie, Sarah, Jenn, Brenda, Lynn, Chelsie, and all the others we may have forgotten.

Mabel was born Nov. 13, 1930, in Whetstone Township Crawford County, Bucyrus, to Oscar and Marguerite (Kelly) Ruth. Mabel married Richard Detterman on Sept. 28, 1951, at Grace EUB Church in Bucyrus, and he preceded her in death in 2012.

Mabel is survived by one son, Chris of Bucyrus; three daughters, Peggy George of St. Marys, Inez Rakausas of Monteagle, Tennessee, and Marlene (Bernard) Cramer of Marion; 13 grandchildren she was "Grandma" to, Rob (Buffy) Detterman, Brian Detterman, Cory (Samantha) Detterman, Eric George, Libby Warunek, Kurt (Maria) Detterman, Luke (Sara) Cramer, Bess (Christopher) Daniel, Jenney George, Gwen (Jason) Burlison, Abraham (Ashley) Cramer, Jolene (Michael) Sibbalds, and Neil (Morgan) Cramer; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three brothers-in-law, Kevin Rothhaar, Gerald (Donna) Detterman, and Kenneth (Evalena) Detterman.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan; sons-in-law, Steve George and Rocky Rakausas; three brothers, Walter, Earl, and Gale Ruth; and two sisters, Mary McHenry and Arlene Lohr.

Mabel retired from Seneca East School in 1996 where she was janitor and "the bread and butter" lunch lady! She had many memories from so many students even into her retirement years. She graduated in 1948 from North Robinson High School. She participated in GAA, band, color guard, and 4-H while in high school. She was a former member of Attica and Bloomville Lioness Clubs, along with being President. She enjoyed playing BINGO, spending time making apple butter with the members of College Hill UCC and at the Oak Ridge Festival, and making her famous apple cake for others. Mabel was a Red Cross Blood donor over the years even after fighting a small battle of colon cancer, donating around 13 gallons of blood plasma. She was especially happy about having the right kind of plasma that preemie babies could receive.

Mabel was always ready to help out anybody and volunteered at many food pantries over the years. She was a former member of Union Pisgah UM Church, Attica, and College Hill UCC, Bloomville.

Mabel's funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, at Lindsey-Shook Funeral Home, Bloomville, with Pastor Ron Spyker officiating. Mabel's final resting place will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bloomville. Visitation for friends and family will be 12-1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to American Red Cross, Legacy Bucyrus memory care unit, or charity of the donor's choice.
