David Dyer Obituary

David C. Dyer, 74, of Haverhill, Mass., and formerly of Kankakee, passed away Monday (Nov. 13, 2023), after two years of various health issues following brain surgery.

Earlier this year he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Deborah L. Dyer.

He was born in White Plains, N.Y., on May 7, 1949, the son of Benjamin W. Dyer Jr. and Deborah (Stritzinger) Dyer. His parents preceded him in death.

Dave earned a master's degree in history from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Following which, he began working in journalism in 1974. Dave was a sports writer and wrote the column "Dyer Straits" at The Daily Journal, Kankakee, from 1976 to 1986, with a brief hiatus working for The News-Gazette in Champaign. Dave's passion for sports extended beyond writing and he was also a dedicated runner and fitness enthusiast. He was a member of the Kankakee Area YMCA and an active participant of the Kankakee River Running Club. He continued his journalism career in Haverhill, Mass., until 2021.

Funeral arrangements are by Dole, Childs and Shaw Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Haverhill, Mass.
