Duane Dunnagan Obituary

Duane Carlos Dunnagan, age 70, of Oxford, Michigan, passed away at home in hospice care on January 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Duane was born in 1955 in Highland Park, Michigan, to Clayton and Lola Dunnagan. He grew up in Ferndale, where he developed the strong values that guided his life-faith, kindness, hard work, and a deep sense of responsibility to others.
A devoted Christian, Duane lived his faith daily through service, generosity, and compassion. He earned a degree in Marketing from the University of Detroit Mercy and worked as a Sales Representative. Later, after a battle with cancer, he became a stay-at-home father, dedicating himself fully to caring for his children while his wife, Karen, worked full-time. He took immense pride in this role, and his presence, patience, and love shaped his family in countless ways. Above all else, Duane was most proud to be a father and grandfather.
Duane is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Dunnagan; his children Duane (Rene), Jason (Larissa), and Russell (Mary); and his cherished grandchildren Dylan, Drake, Delilah, Duke, Anna, and Austin, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings Joe (Dixie) and Denise. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Lola.
A true gentleman, Duane was deeply thoughtful and especially attentive to the needs of the elderly and those with disabilities. He believed strongly in paying it forward and quietly lived that principle every day. Known for his sense of humor and famously bad dad jokes, he brought laughter and warmth wherever he went, always mindful of the comfort of others.
Duane loved gardening and anything that allowed him to be outdoors. He had a remarkable green thumb and could never resist bringing home a new plant. He delighted in decorating his home-inside and out-for every holiday, even the smallest ones. A passionate collector, he treasured shells, shark teeth, fossils, and Elvis memorabilia. A devoted Star Trek fan, he could identify an episode from just its opening scene.
His love for children extended far beyond his own family. Duane worked in and ran the church nursery, coached children's sports, and volunteered at local schools tutoring children. Duane shared patience, faith, and encouragement with every child he met.
Above all else, Duane loved his family and his faith. His life was one of quiet devotion, service, and love-a legacy that will live on through all who were blessed to know him.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 – 11am at Modetz Funeral Home, 100 E. Silverbell Rd., Orion.
A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 13th, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Wednesday 10am until time of service.
