Raymond F. Schalk
Raymond F. Schalk, 90, of Findlay, passed away Friday, Sept.20, 2024, at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay, surrounded by his family he loved.
Raymond was born June 13, 1934, in New Reigel to the late Alphonse and Catherine (Reinhart) Schalk. After graduating from New Reigel High School in 1952, Raymond joined the United States Air Force. While stationed in Germany, he met his wife Anne Specht, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage Aug. 9, 2024.
She survives in Findlay. Also surviving are his children, Mary (Mark) Miller, Michael (Patsy) Schalk both of Findlay, Elisabeth (Gregory) Philipp of McComb, Theresa (Richard) Maurer of Vanlue, Raymond (Dalis) Schalk of Williston, North Dakota and Linda (John) Piña of Arcadia; 14 grandchildren, Angel (Brian)Wilcox, Richard (Jhoanna ) Miller, Robert (Courtney) Miller, Trent Thompson, Todd (Julie) Thompson, Tara (Joe) Thompson, April (Andy) Noel, Christopher (Nicole) Brickner, Ashley Philipp, Matthew (Aubrey) Maurer, Christina (CJ) Couch, Catherine Schalk, Franklin Piña and Zachary Piña; 12-great-grandchildren with one on the way; a sister, Rose Smith; and a sister-in-law Shirley Schalk.
Raymond was preceded in death by his son, Richard Schalk July 6, 1986; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Raymond rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force where he was a pilot. After his honorable discharge, Raymond returned to Ohio and worked as an air traffic controller for the FAA. Being stationed in Oberlin, Cincinnati and then coming to Findlay to be closer to his family. He retired in 1989 after over 30 years of service.
Faith was a very important part of Raymond's life. He was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Carey. He always said his daily devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The most important part of Raymond's life was his family. He bestowed a strong work ethic on his children. The family enjoyed picnics, hikes and a memorable trip back to Germany in 1980. Raymond also enjoyed Polka and Square Dancing with his lovely wife Anne. They were inseparable from each other, where one was the other was right by their side. They showed that love and devotion to their entire family, through the Sunday dinners gatherings and by the love they showed each other.
Visitation for Raymond will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at Stombaugh-Batton & Snyder Funeral Home, Carey with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept.26, 2024, at Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Parish, with the Rev. Tom Merrill OFM Conv., officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
