Richard Burns Obituary

Richard Henry Burns

Richard Henry Burns, 80, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully into the arms of his savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

Richard was born July 15, 1942, in Tiffin, to Edward and Helen (Baumgardner) Burns. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Tom, Paul, Eugene, Alan, and Carol (Buck) Burns. He is survived by his beloved sister, Carolyn Hoover; and beautiful wife, Nancy (Boner) Burns, who he loved and cherished for 62 wonderful years. Together they raised four children, Gary J. Burns, Cyndi S. Coleman, Dennis E. (Heidi) Burns, all of Tiffin, and Duane T. (Lisa) Burns of Bradenton, Florida, and 21 grandchildren. They both worked tirelessly to give all of them a wonderful childhood and Christian upbringing. While raising a family of their own, over many years, they also were able to be temporary foster parents to many teenagers who were in need of a home.

Richard (Dick) attended St Mary's Catholic Church, Tiffin, and graduated from Calvert High School in 1960 and shortly thereafter was drafted by Cleveland Indians. He excelled in all sports, but he was known as one of the best pitchers to ever come out of Northwest Ohio. After his stint with the Indians and their minor league system, he played semi-pro ball for a dozen more years. While still playing, he served as a fantastic mentor and coach to so many young players and was respected by all. During those years, he worked for Kleppers in Tiffin and was well known for his kindness and generosity on his delivery routes.

In 1980, he and Nancy moved to Sarasota, Florida. Both Dick and Nancy worked as well as volunteered countless hours at Incarnation Catholic Church in Sarasota, making sure thousands of people had a beautiful environment for worship and fellowship. Dick will always be remembered for his never wavering faith and his never-ending journey to spread the good word and help as many people as possible.

Arrangements are being made by Robert Toale Funeral Home. There will be a funeral at Incarnation Church in Sarasota, followed by a memorial service and burial in Tiffin. Dates have not been determined.

Dick was the last of the old west end gang that played sports over at Washington school back in the 50's 60s'. Dick was a true friend and i was BLESSED when he was in our wedding. Dick was always a GREAT fellow, and his passing makes this world less. Many great and fond memories have traveled thru my head of the old days. We were all BLESSED by Dick and the Burns Family. REST IN PEACE. Condolence to the family and i know how much he loved Nancy. Dick will never be forgotten, and not because of his baseball But for being one who you could count on in any matter.
