AUBURN - Rita Mary Baird, 77, of Auburn, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2024.
Rita was born to Anthony "Pete" Miller and Berneda Helen Miller (Smythlony) in Garrett, Indiana, on Nov. 27, 1946.
She grew up on a farm in Waterloo, Indiana, and graduated from Waterloo, High School in 1964.
She lived in Waterloo and Auburn, Indiana, and was involved in farming for most of her life at home and at work. She worked at Farmers Home and then the Farm Service Agency for 32 years, helping the agricultural community of DeKalb County, retiring in 2011.
After retiring from the Federal Government she worked at the Auburn Cord Deusenberg Museum, volunteered Catholic Charities food bank and coat drive, and prepared meals for Eckhart Public Library board meetings.
She loved gardening, playing cards with her cousins, and decorating for all seasons, especially Christmas.
She was a member of the local garden club, herb club, Business and Professional Women International, and several book clubs.
She leaves behind her sister, Kathleen Worthington (Brad), of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Renee Custer, of Angola, Indiana; son, Ryan Baird (Allison), of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two grandchildren, Mara and Tyrus Baird; and a niece, Cheri Riley; her beloved dog, Jake; and many friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Margaret Miller; two infant brothers; one infant sister; and her son, Rodney Dunn.
She was generous of time and spirit, and beloved by many. She was always there for whoever needed her.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at noon, at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, north of Waterloo ,with Father Levi Nkwocha officiating.
Memorials may be given in memory of Rita to DeKalb Humane Society, P.O. Box 806, Auburn, IN 46706 and to Masses.
