Stephen G. Ecos

Stephen G. Ecos, 89, of Tiffin, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022, at St. Francis Home.

He was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Tiffin, to George and Gertrude (Bertsch) Ecos.

Surviving are two sons, Nicholas (Mary Kay Plantes) Ecos of La Jolla, California, and Christopher (Jean) Ecos of Hartland, Wisconsin; two daughters, Joanne Perko of Chagrin Falls and Kathleen (Jack) Zahn of Maumee; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, James Ecos of Tiffin; and two sisters, Mary Jean Tiell and Donna Letterhos, both of Tiffin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Ecos; and sister, Elaine Petsche.

Mr. Ecos was a 1950 graduate of Calvert High School, Tiffin, where he was a class officer and co-captain of the football team. He went on to play football at Heidelberg University, where he graduated in 1954, and he remained an avid football fan for life. He served in U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He retired as a high school teacher at Columbian High School and enjoyed continuing to mentor his students even after he retired. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of Seneca County Board of Elections for 24 years, volunteered at Mercy Hospital, and was a St. Francis Home visitation ambassador, where he spent much time visiting with residents. Many former students, colleagues, and others he encountered from his many activities in Tiffin became friends for life.

The family would like to thank St. Francis Home and its staff for the loving care provided to Steve.

Visitation for family and friends will be 1-2:30 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio, 44883, (419) 447-3113. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery and will be officiated by the Rev. Anthony Coci.
