Richard Esparza was my first boss when I moved to California, he hired me away from 3Com before I'd even gotten to my desk there. I was living on savings, and when my first check was held by Wells Fargo for a week as the account was pretty new I was devastated as I knew virtually no one and you couldn't just send money from Oregon in a few hours aside from Western Union and even that was a PITA.
I was completely terrified, and without prompting Richard loaned me $400 for the week for the hotel I was staying at. I paid it back the next Friday. I never forgot it, and he's always held a very special place in my heart - while he probably wasn't always the best manager day-to-day, he treated me with dignity. My employees are richer for it - he taught me that managing was more than just about the work, it was also about ensuring your employees are ok. While we hadn't touched base in years, I remember his voice like it was yesterday.
Thank you, Richard, for everything.

I pray for peace and comfort for your family in this time.
It’s sometimes odd the things we remember about people. I remember your hair, your posture, your deep voice, and laughing at odd moments.
I paused when selecting relationship. I entered "friend," but feels like "family."

Daddy, I’m not ready to be without you. You were and will always be my best friend. I know it will just be a blink of an eye until you see us again but it will feel like an eternity until I hear your whistle. I love you big, forever.

Richard was always apart of my life like a big brother. I know my parents were proud of all he accomplished and the good man he became.
