Richard Esparza Obituary

Richard M. Esparza, Jr., age 76, a decorated Vietnam War Veteran and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness on April 4, 2025.

Born in Gilroy, California, Richard dedicated his life to service, both to his country and to his family. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned numerous commendations for his bravery, dedication, and leadership. His military service was marked by honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and his nation.

After returning home, Richard continued to live a life defined by love and integrity. He married the love of his life, Stella, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Together, they built a family grounded in faith, resilience, and deep affection.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Ceballos, his children, Christine Arrocena (Moises), Suzanne Esparza, and Richard Esparza (April), his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life and carry forward his legacy of strength and compassion.

Richard will be remembered not only for his heroic service, but also for his warm heart, and the steady, quiet strength that made him a pillar of his family and community. He had a love for fishing, RVing, and gardening and found peace in the simple pleasures of life, especially time spent with loved ones.

Family and friends are invited to a Vigil Service on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 7 PM at Habing Family Funeral Home located at 129 4th St, Gilroy CA. A funeral service honoring Richard's life will be held on April 14, 2025 at 10 AM, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gilroy, followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery. Richard Esparza was my first boss when I moved to California, he hired me away from 3Com before I'd even gotten to my desk there. I was living on savings, and when my first check was held by Wells Fargo for a week as the account was pretty new I was devastated as I knew virtually no one and you couldn't just send money from Oregon in a few hours aside from Western Union and even that was a PITA.

I was completely terrified, and without prompting Richard loaned me $400 for the week for the hotel I was staying at. I paid it back the next Friday. I never forgot it, and he's always held a very special place in my heart - while he probably wasn't always the best manager day-to-day, he treated me with dignity. My employees are richer for it - he taught me that managing was more than just about the work, it was also about ensuring your employees are ok. While we hadn't touched base in years, I remember his voice like it was yesterday.

Thank you, Richard, for everything.

I pray for peace and comfort for your family in this time.

It’s sometimes odd the things we remember about people. I remember your hair, your posture, your deep voice, and laughing at odd moments.

I paused when selecting relationship. I entered "friend," but feels like "family."

Daddy, I’m not ready to be without you. You were and will always be my best friend. I know it will just be a blink of an eye until you see us again but it will feel like an eternity until I hear your whistle. I love you big, forever.
