Keith Swinehart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 20, 2025.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Keith A. Swinehart, Feb. 19, 2025, age 66, of Alexandria, VA, formerly from Blue Island, IL.

Born in Evergreen Park, IL, Keith's life was distinguished by years of honorable service to the American people and the United States Government. A 1984 graduate of Southern Illinois University, Keith joined the United States Army where he began his illustrious career. In December 1986, Keith completed his Criminal Investigator Training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. and joined the ranks of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, as a Special Agent. From 1987 until his retirement in 2018, Keith held the positions of Diplomatic Courier, Regional Security Officer (RSO) assigned to overseas posts in Lima, Peru; Karachi, Pakistan; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Jerusalem, Israel; Manama, Bahrain; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Baghdad, Iraq; Manila, Philippines; and Islamabad, Pakistan. Domestically, Keith served two tours in DS Headquarters as Deputy Regional Director and later Regional Director in the International Programs Directorate.

Promoted into the Senior Foreign Service in 2011, Keith's achievements were recognized throughout his career, and he was the recipient of numerous Meritorious and Superior Honor awards for outstanding service.

Although it was too short, Keith made the most of his retirement. He enjoyed traveling, visiting friends, taking in a ballgame or two, and most importantly spending time with his family. He was so looking forward to moving back home.

Keith was a loving, compassionate, humble and generous brother who loved life and would light up the room wherever he went. He will truly be missed by all of us who loved him dearly.

Keith is survived by his sister Susan Vaughan (Don), niece Michelle Nunez (Jessie), great niece and apple of his eye Mila Nunez, sister Linda Swinehart, nephew Mark Priorello Jr., and brother Kevin Swinehart. He is preceded in death by his parents Lois (Voy Tassak) and Ralph Swinehart.

A private memorial service with family members will be held back home in May.

Donations may be made on behalf of Keith to the American Heart Association.

It was my honor to have worked with Keith on the Secretary of State's Protective Detail and at Embassy Lima. Keith was a true professional and the definition of a good man. He served his nation and he will be missed.

I worked with Keith a couple times at Diplomatic Security Headquarters in the International Programs Directorate, & I supported him while he was in Pakistan by procuring & sending pallets of medical supplies.

In addition to having a great sense of humor, he had a real sweet tooth and treated his work colleagues with baked goods from the Amish bakery.

I'm so glad I saw him on King Street in Alexandria in the fall 2024. Rest in Peace Keith. You will be missed for your kindness. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Keith worked with me on the Secretary of State´s Detail. He was incredibly reliable and took his job very seriously. He could be placed in any serious situation and we knew he´d get the job done. He was humble and quietly very funny. He´ll be missed by so many DS agents! Rest in Peace Keith!

Dear Family and Friends of Keith - I had the good fortune to work with Keith for a year when I was assigned to an office at DS Headquarters. He was an incredibly hard worker, talented problem-solver, and had computer memory. Along with that he had a quiet sense of humor that broke up the most tense moments. I was awed by his positivity, and then came the quiet sarcasm... I will cherish those memories. Safe travels and Godspeed.

I have good memories of Keith. He and I came into the service as a result of the Inman study after the Beirute bombings in the early 1980s. He projected himself in a positively way and was an example to follow. My condolences to the family. He was taken from us way too early.
