Cornelia Christy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sanders Funeral Home - Lubbock on Mar. 17, 2025.
Cornelia (Connie) Chavez Christy passed away March 5, 2025, at the age of 94.
She was born on December 23, 1930 in Tucumcari, New Mexico to the late Maria and Jose Chavez. She graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1948 and later from St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing in Amarillo, Texas. In 1953, she met and married the love of her life, James William (Jim) Christy. They married on December 5, 1953 and enjoyed a blessed, loving union of 70 years, five children, 11 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.
Connie enjoyed part time nursing in the field of clinic nursing, coronary care, patient teaching, and infection control until her retirement in 1985. In her retirement, she volunteered in hospice care in Brenham, Texas and served as secretary of Bread Partners of Washington County for several years. The couple returned to Lubbock in 2001, having lived in the area throughout the late seventies and early eighties.
Connie enjoyed traveling with her husband as long as they were able, making several trips to Europe, Alaska, and the east and west coasts of the United States. With her husband, she was active in the Serra Club of Lubbock for many years. They were members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Though a nurse by trade, Connie's most cherished work was in the home. Most proud to be Mrs. James Christy, she was a supporting and loving wife to Jim, and was a fantastic mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a caretaker by nature, a hostess at heart, and her family's biggest fan. She enjoyed attending events and cheering loudly for her loved ones.
She was tenacious, could accomplish anything she set her mind to, and would ensure others strived to accomplish their best, too. A lifelong learner, Connie read often and relished trying new things - most recently taking piano lessons at the age of 89.
She had a precious heart and a sassy spunk about her that left her loved ones smiling (sometimes while shaking their heads). Connie was full of life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Jim, her parents, sister Corrine, brothers Ramon and Mariano Chavez, daughter Diana June Christy, and son Thomas Christy.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter-in-law, Paula Christy of Elgin, son, Don Christy (Eri) of Las Vegas, Nevada, daughters, Linda Gallagher (Brett) of Lubbock, and Maria Turnbull of Lubbock, along with a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 21 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (9821 Frankford Ave). A private interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Connie's honor be directed to Meals on Wheels.

I was thinking of Connie since my own mother is not doing well.Elaine Swilley is our mother. She and James were 1st cousins.I saw Connie´s obituary online and was very sad.She was so kind to us .We usually stopped in to say hello when traveling to Amarillo to visit Juanita.Mom and James would usually call each other on their birthdays and mom would always talk with Connie. All of those cousins from Amarillo, just a few left...that generation...they are missed so much.I wished we kids could have been as close as they were.
Sincerely,
Roxanne Howard.
