Faith Coombs Delvo passed away peacefully at University Of Maryland Charles Regional Hospital in LaPlata on 3/20/2025 at the remarkable age of 100, surrounded by her loving family. All were convinced she'd be on earth for another couple of birthdays, but Faith had her own plans. Although she didn't share them out loud, it is likely she concluded that, having reached the milestone of 100, it was time to commune with those loved ones who had preceded her to Heaven and were sorely missed.
Born to Augustus and Lena Welch on February 1, 1925, Faith spent her childhood on the family farm in Welcome, MD. One of eight children, Faith's father passed away of tuberculosis when she was just eight years old, leaving Faith and her siblings to assist her mother with running the farm. The lessons of these early years could be witnessed in Faith's life-long work-ethic, resourcefulness, and commitment to family.
Faith attended La Plata High School and graduated in 1942, the same year that she married Harold W. Coombs, Sr. This union was blessed with four children: Dianne, Debbie, Harolly and Timmy. In 1946, the couple purchased land in Pomfret where they built, owned, and operated a little store on what was then Rt. 227 now known as Joe's Groceries. During those years, Faith ran the store, ran the family plastering business, and played an active role in caring for her sister Betty, who died of polio in 1977.
In 1963 Faith and Mom became Maw Maw as the first of 12 eventual grandchildren were born. In addition to tending to her growing family, Faith worked at Annapolis Federal Savings and Loan, eventually retiring as a branch manager in 1987.
Faith moved to Morgantown, MD in 1987 to care for her mother (who also lived to be older than 100!) She married Herman Delvo in 1990 and they took up residence on the Potomac River near her mother's cottage. It was in this home on the river that Maw Maw became a great-grandmother, and eventually a great-great grandmother. Through it all, Faith continued to model deep love and commitment to her growing family by hosting Christmas Eve celebrations, summer crab feasts, and an endless number of smaller visits in the front room of her home, overlooking the Potomac River.
In addition to family, Faith was connected to a large web of friends and community members. She volunteered at the American Legion and at Goose Bay Marina. She was a member of the Port Tobacco Yacht Club and a lifetime member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 82 in LaPlata. Faith and Herman also loved to travel the country, and they were pros at finding antique treasures that they would bring home to refurbish and collect or regift.
Finally, anyone who knew Faith knew her love for animals, particularly cats. Maw Maw always had at least one cat roaming around, and even the most temperamental creature could find its way into her heart and under her care.
Faith is survived by her children, Dianne Huntt, Debbie Winkler (Gale Willett), Timmy Coombs, (Phyllis), daughter in law, Karen Coombs, step children, Marion Allen (Rocky) and daughter in law, Kim Delvo as well as 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Augustus and Lena Welch, her first husband, Harold W. Coombs, her second husband, Herman W. Delvo, her son, Harolly Coombs, her granddaughters Tracy Rebecca, Kimberly Sue, and Stacy Lynn, her son-in-law Pat Huntt, and stepsons Paul Delvo and Robert Delvo.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 from 3PM to 7PM with Memories at 6pm at the Raymond Funeral Service, P.A., 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, Maryland 20646.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, April 2nd at 11AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 4590 St. Joseph Way, Pomfret, Maryland 20675.
Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
