Opal Ellen Burton, a longtime resident of Cimarron County, passed from this life on April 3,
2025, in
Lubbock, Texas. She was born at Midwell, Oklahoma on February 6, 1930, to Ward
S. and Mary Lillian Huston Hanes.
Opal started school at Midwell and later attended and graduated from Plainview, Oklahoma
in 1948. While in high school she excelled in basketball. Upon graduation, Opal attended
Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. She moved to Boise City, Oklahoma and was
employed by the Graham Insurance Agency for many years, working with the Grahams,
Gillenwaters and later with the Ogles Insurance Agency.
Opal was united in marriage to Wendell Leo Burton on September 27, 1953. They were the
first couple to be married in the new building of the church of Christ in Boise City. They
remained faithful members and workers in the church before moving to
Lubbock, Texas in
2019.
Opal and Wendell shared 71 years of marriage together. To this union two children were
born, Rhonda Rose and Kendell Allen. Together they lived on the family farm west of Boise
City, where they farmed and raised cattle. Opal had a garden and helped with the farming,
especially during harvest. Later, they moved back to Boise City, where she worked in the
yard and always had beautiful roses. Opal also influenced countless children while teaching
bible classes for many years. Black Mesa Bible Camp was also a big part of her life. She
always had time for family and enjoyed being around her Christian family. Working in
public was something she did well. Opal always had a willingness to help others. Her house
was literally an open door for meals or for someone needing a place to stay for the night. She
was the definition of a true servant of God.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, two sisters, Jewel Wills and Ruby Wilson, three
brothers, Huston Hanes, Ward G. Hanes and Ellis Hanes,
