Rufina Zuniga, 96 of Lubbock passed away peacefully on Sunday March 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 19, 1928 in Edinburg, Texas to the late Concepcion and Lusia (Ruiz) Gonzalez. She married Candelario Zuniga on April 18, 1953, in McAllen, Texas and together they began their family and creating beautiful memories together.
Rufina was a devout catholic and a strong woman of faith, she was a Guadalupana and a Cursillsta. She was a homemaker and enjoyed family gathering where she would prepare delicious meals, including her famous tortillas. She enjoyed playing bingo, lottery tickets and had a love for birds. She always shared strong words of advice with her children and grandchildren, she was that special grandmother that would slip a dollar bill in your hand. She will always be remembered for her radiant smile.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 72 years, Candelario Zuniga; children, Arturo Zuniga and wife Linda, Juanita Olivarez and husband Ricardo, Andres Zuniga, Jose Zuniga and wife Sylvia, Pedro Zuniga and wife Amy, Ricardo Zuniga and wife Yolanda, Elida Martinez and husband Hector, Vickie Cantu and husband Emanuel, Gilberto Zuniga, and Gloria Gaytan and husband Ernest; 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 2 great- great grandchildren, and several extended family members.
Rufina was preceded in death by her parents Concepcion and Luisa Gonzalez; son, Victor Zuniga; grandchildren, Adam Zuniga, Thomas Zuniga, Timothy Zuniga, and Julian Gaytan; brothers, Esteban Gonzalez, Celestino Gonzalez, Nicolas Gonzalez, Martin Gonzalez, and Simon Gonzalez; sisters, Petra Gonzalez, Marcelina Zuniga, Estanislada Mendoza, and Bidala Rodriguez.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m. at House of Angels Funeral Home Chapel, 1928 34th Street, Lubbock, Texas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1120 52nd street, Lubbock, Texas, with Rev. Jose de Dios Gonzalez officiating. Burial will follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park, Woodrow, Texas.
The Zuniga family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Hospice of Lubbock and her nurse, Peggy, for the support and care they provided for our mother. We would also like to thank all who have sent their heartfelt condolences and prayers for our family.
