Charles Adams M.D.

Charles Gordon "Charlie" Adams M.D. a devoted physician, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished member of the Vermilion community, died Friday, March 20, 2026, at age 90.

Born March 19, 1936, at Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Charlie was the son of Charles Gordon Adams and Mildred Edna Victoria Cederlof Adams. He was raised in the Tiffin and Bloomville area of northwest Ohio, where his father worked at Bloomville France Stone Quarry, and his mother served as a surgical nurse. His early years were shaped by the strong work ethic and resilience of his parents and cousins (Behm), and by a childhood spent in the close-knit communities of Seneca County. Charlie was just eight years old when his father passed away in 1945, a loss that deeply affected his childhood and helped shape the sense of responsibility and determination that guided him throughout his life.

Charlie graduated from Kenyon College, where he played baseball and formed lifelong friendships and memories along the college's historic Middle Path. He later pursued his calling in medicine at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine. During his first year of medical school, he received the James A. Gibson Anatomical Society Award in recognition of his excellence in anatomy.

While training in Buffalo, Charlie also worked at Roswell Park Memorial Hospital, where he participated in pediatric leukemia research under Dr. Donald Pinkel, who would later become a pioneer in childhood leukemia treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Charlie married the love of his life, Margaret "Peg" Hubert, June 24, 1961, in Buffalo, New York, beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades.

Charlie completed his internship and residency training at Akron General Hospital, rotating through internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics. During this period, he experienced one of the most meaningful and difficult moments of his life, being at the bedside of his mother when she passed away in December 1962.

In 1965, Charlie moved to Vermilion, to join Dr. John Wright in family practice. The decision would shape the rest of his life. Vermilion quickly became home, and the community became like an extended family. There, he and Peg raised their four sons: Gordon, Karl, Kevin, and Bruce.

Charlie saw his first patient December 15, 1965, and continued caring for Vermilion families until May 30, 2011, when he saw his final patient after nearly 49 years of medical practice. During the early years of his practice, Charlie delivered approximately 100 babies each year, helping bring countless Vermilion residents into the world. Over the decades, he was known as a compassionate and trusted family physician who cared for multiple generations of families. Many patients affectionately referred to him simply as "Doc Adams."

Charlie remained active in the medical profession throughout his career. He served as President of the Lorain County Medical Society in 1984 and later represented his district as a physician delegate to the Ohio State Medical Association from 1986 to 1992.

Faith and service were central to Charlie's life. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion, where he taught adult Sunday School, sang in the church choir, and served several terms as President of the Church Council during his years of involvement.

Beyond his faith and skill as a physician, Charlie was known for his quick wit, warm sense of humor, and gift for storytelling. Whether sharing stories from his medical career or recalling memories of family and friends, he had a natural ability to entertain those around him and bring laughter to any gathering.

Outside of medicine, Charlie had a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. He was an intrepid landscaper and gardener who enjoyed working with natural stone, often constructing thoughtful landscaping features that reflected his creativity. He especially enjoyed decorating his landscaping with field stones and other treasures he discovered over the years. He enjoyed time on the golf course and, in his earlier years, taking his wife and young sons on boat trips across the Great Lakes, creating memories that the family would cherish for a lifetime. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his wife in Florida.

One of Charlie's most beloved traditions was welcoming two Canadian geese who returned each spring to nest in his yard along the water. For nearly two decades, he faithfully greeted them each day, feeding and talking to them as they returned to lay their eggs. Affectionately named Ralph and Ruthie, they became familiar companions and a cherished part of his daily life.

Throughout his life, Charlie often reflected on how fortunate he felt to care for others as a physician, to share a loving marriage with Peg, and to live in a community that meant so much to him. He once described Vermilion as "a great place to have dropped the Adams family anchor."

He is survived by his beloved wife Peg; his sons, Gordon, Karl, Kevin, and Bruce; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, dedication, and service.

A service celebrating Charlie's life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church.
