Courtney Shoemaker Obituary

Courtney Mae Shoemaker

Courtney Mae Shoemaker, 38, of Columbus, was born June 20, 1985, in Tiffin, and left this spinning ball we call Earth on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024.

Very kind, loving, thoughtful, fun-loving, compassionate, quick to offer assistance, and frequently putting the needs of others above her own despite her own challenges describes Courtney perfectly. Her empathy and deep compassion extended to both people and animals. She lived by the mantra "save one – save yourself."

Courtney's boldness and spirited nature worked well for her in her career. She worked for Chase Bank for 10 years as a Collection Agent in addition to managing a collections department. Graduating from Columbus State Community College with a degree in Electronic Repair broadened her keen mechanical abilities. This achievement both furthered and satisfied her thirst for technology and knowledge.

She was a VERY adamant Ohio State fan. Because of her loyalty to and passion for the Buckeyes, anyone attending her service is encouraged to wear OSU attire, but it is not required. Courtney's very fun-loving nature was reflected in the "trick" she taught her dog, Buckeye. Courtney would ask Buckeye, "What do we do to Wolverines?!" Buckeye would start barking and growling fiercely. Then Courtney would say, "That's right! We 'woof' 'em up!"

Courtney Mae was born to Diane Shoemaker and Bruce Cesco, both of whom survive. She is also survived by her beloved daughter, Alexa Oakley; stepfather, Danny Overton; stepmother, Suzanne Cesco; stepbrothers, Wayne (Melissa) Overton, Tony Overton, Aaron (Aubrey) Overton, and Kyle (Andrea) Jones; dear maternal grandparents, Janice Mae (Shoemaker) McCuen and Dan McCuen; great-aunt, Linda Hammer; uncle, David Shoemaker; and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved dog, "Buckeye"; maternal grandparents, Ray (Judy) Shoemaker; and paternal grandparents, Talmadge "Whetrock" (Maefern) Cesco. In homage to grandmothers, her middle name was from theirs, "Mae."

Visitation will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, until the time of Courtney's memorial service at 12 p.m. at HOENING & SON FUNERAL HOME, 133 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, Ohio, 44830. Pastor Amy Kinney will preside. Following the memorial service, all are invited to a funeral luncheon at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1371 S. State Route 587, Fostoria, Ohio, 44830.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the animal rescue organization for which Courtney volunteered. Church of the Angels provides assistance to animals as well as their people and donations can be sent to 5666 Morgan Road, New Albany, Ohio, 43054. You may also feel free to make a donation to charity of your choice.

courtney s- 38 when she died- a friend of mine for 20 years give or take- she was a wild child with a heart of gold. I have so many memoires, like the time she rescued a litter of newborn kittens and took them to work- she worked in an office world- so, she told her boss she had a tummy issue and left every two hours to go feed them- or the time she showed up here with a scratching post that was so big it took two folks to get it indoors! or the time she rescued a dog who had a tragic back story- she named the dog Paris, and treated the dog well, but the dog was broken beyond all help, and the hard choice was made to give her peace- i rode along with courtney to the vet, and watched as courtney gently held Paris until she was gone to angel dust, then grabbed that dog and sobbed and sobbed. Courtney was one of the good ones. Courtney was one of the kind ones and there are very very few of those around. Courtney was a great help with the Church of the Angels, providing much support, many volunteer hours, and always and i mean Always pitching in to help when asked.
I felt like an aunt- i knew her mom, good folk is her mom- that is how i met Courtney. I know her mom is past heartbroken, and i feel for the entire family, from daughter to grandma- they all weep- I know most of all Courtney is with her dog Buckeye today- and they will be angels to watch over us until the time comes for us to join them.
