Elaine J. Knutson

Elaine Joan Knutson, 86, of Tiffin, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Elaine was a trailblazer, a devoted wife and mother, and a respected attorney and judge whose legacy will be felt throughout Seneca County. She was the beloved wife of William Springenberg and the proud mother of two sons, Randall and Curtis Knutson. She was also a cherished grandmother to Casey, Connor, Reilly, Megan, and Colin Knutson, and survived by her brother, Delwyn Henry and his wife, Lois and their children, Jana and Grant.

While raising her two young sons during the day, she pursued her dream of practicing law by commuting to the University of Toledo College of Law at night. She earned her Juris Doctor in 1976 and was admitted to the Ohio Bar that same year. Elaine took the Ohio Bar Exam and received the second-highest score in the state. She would go on to become the first female lawyer in Seneca County, paving the way for women in the legal profession.

Over the course of her distinguished career, Elaine served in numerous roles, including as Interim Seneca County Prosecuting Attorney (1999) and later as Tiffin Municipal Judge. She was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court (1988) and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio (2005).

Elaine was known for her warmth, her sharp wit, her strength, and her devotion to her family and friends. In addition to her legal career, Elaine was an avid bridge player who achieved the honor of becoming a Lifetime Bridge Master, a distinction that reflected her strategic mind and love of spirited competition.

Elaine's life was one of purpose, accomplishment, and love. She set an example for generations, showing that perseverance and service can change a community and open doors for others.
